A Day Late, a Dollar Long

Why is consistency so important in podcasting? Do we really need to publish one episode every Wednesday morning at 6 am sharp?!

In my 15+ years as a podcast editor and 5+ years as a podcast agency owner, the most important reason to maintain this consistency is for the podcaster themselves. This goal of consistency (whether it be publishing every Tuesday, every other Wednesday, or heck, even twice a month) keeps the podcast host organized and accountable.

A close second, or maybe even a tie for first, is doing it for the viewer/listener. If you publish every Tuesday morning at 1 am, your podcast followers very well may have carved out a little routine in their week to consume your pod. Perhaps they tune in on the drive to work. Maybe they watch and listen during their morning routine or during their weekly Tuesday workout. Your ideal podcast viewer/listener will look forward to consuming your podcast each week.

This may lead you to the question: “Zack, why did you mention the importance of flexible consistency in podcasting in this post’s subtitle?” Your ideal podcast viewer/listener is NOT going to unfollow your podcast because you’re a day late every once in a while, or because you published a couple of re-runs, or heck, even if you miss a week from time to time - they ain’t leavin’!

It’s not worth beating yourself up if you occasionally publish an episode out of schedule. The keyword here is “occasionally.” Do your best to keep track of your publishing schedule…the Pod Fade Monster is a fan of falling behind and consistently slipping off schedule. 👹

This is your friendly reminder to plan ahead, batch recording when possible, and get help where you can in the podcasting process. Do what you can to stay ahead. But also, give yourself a little grace on the occasional slip. 😎

Your friend in podcasting,

Zack
